The workshop this week was on graduate school prep and CV writing.
The presentation points included:
Is graduate school for me?
Types of graduate programs
Opportunities and gains
Choices! Selecting a program, advisor, topic, etc.
Applications and process
Since I have been considering graduate school for the past couple of years, I have already done some research on grad school and if it is a good fit for me. I have come to the conclusion that I need a break from school after I finish my undergraduate degree. I want to work in my field for 2-5 years and then apply to a Neuroscience PhD program (if I determine that is the right move for my career).
The professors that attended the workshop shared a bit of their experience and what path they took that ultimately lead them to pursue grad school. It was very interesting to hear their motivations and perspectives on why they went to grad school when they did. Personally, it was encouraging to hear from one of the professors (Dr. Laura Dev) that she took a few years off after undergrad (because she too was burnt out from school).
When she did end up going to grad school it still was not a straightforward process. She dropped out of the PhD program she first got into (after being rejected the first round of applications). She found that the program was not the right fit for her. However, she did get accepted into a different program in coming years that is now her current PhD. In total it took about 10 years to finish grad school for her.
Hearing her story was reassuring to me that I don't need to speed my way into grad school. I can take this time in-between undergrad and graduate school to breath and work. It took a bit of weight off my shoulders to see someone be successful with this path.
Professional Development
I spent some time trying to find alternate forms of media (not articles) to learn more about interoception. It was very helpful finding that documentary on exclusion last week and I wanted to see if there was something out there that could explain interoception. The following are a couple of YouTube videos that were particularly helpful.
This video is a short animation that describes interoception with visuals. It reminded me of the YouTube channel Crash course with John and Hank Green.
This video is a TEDx talks with Dr. Sarah Garfinkel. She went into depth about interoception and exteroception.
She also talks about her work in 2018 on interoception and individuals with autism.
She mentions the development of tools (software platforms) that are intended to increase interoceptive accuracy. Along with Autism, it was also mentioned the relationship that interoception has with anxiety. The software program tools may help to reduce anxiety in individuals if they can have higher interoceptive accuracy. After a google search was unable to find these tools, so they may be still under development.
Manuscript writing:
I have started writing my introduction to my manuscript. As of right now, I have interoception and exclusion and their separate parts defined. I am in the process of connecting them to the needs threat model and past research. I plan to finish this part of the intro by the end of the weekend.
SUSP Presentation Prep:
I worked on my PowerPoint presentation for SUSP quite a bit this week. I have the methods and background section done. I now need to make index cards of notes when I present. Once the data collection window is closed (July 20, 2023) will complete data analysis and insert that into the presentation.
Podcast:
One artifact that I chose to complete this summer is a podcast that highlights my research. I am almost finished with the outline for the podcast, and I plan to record it next week.
Research Progress:
Started the introduction section to the manuscript.
Got the outline for the podcast 75% done.
Had 2 participants participate in the study this week.
Made substantial progress on the presentation for SUSP.
Posted the study flier on the last Platteville Facebook page I could find.
Struggles this week:
I discovered that the number of no-shows for my study may be a result of online bots filling it out. This can be resolved by putting an encryption on the survey... however, I would need to purchase the enterprise level of sign-up genius. This would cost my $60 a month and therefore, I will just have to put up with the false sign-ups.
Still finding it challenging to read articles, I have been trying to find alternate sources (i.e., YouTube videos, documentaries, etc.) as a result.
