Updated: Jul 17, 2023

This summer (2023) I am a part of the Summer Undergraduate Scholars Program (SUSP) at UW-Platteville. This is a 9-week program that is used to encourage scholarly engagement in research projects. It is condensed time where we can focus on a research project and get paid to do so. Each week there is a weekly workshop that considers different aspects of research.

July 5

Graduate school and/or career success

July 12

By the end of this program, we are to hopeful come out with a better understanding of how research works, along with more confidence in continuing this kind of work past undergraduate school.

Along with the expectations from the program, Dr. Kameko Halfmann (my mentor) has instructed me to create two "artifacts". These are non-traditional pieces of work (not a paper) that explain my research.

Some examples she gave me to work with are:

  • Infographic

  • Letter to a policy maker

  • Podcast episode

  • Social media posts (research in a Tweet, Instagram post, and/or TikTok video series)

  • Video

  • Cartoon

  • Other

My goals with this program

  1. Finish the study I have been working with for the past year.

  2. Find confidence that research is the career for me.

  3. Build skills inside writing and presentation of my research.

  4. Find out more about careers after undergrad (PhD, Lab manager, where).

  5. Create a CV.

Week 1 & 2

Accomplishments these past two weeks include:

  • Moving the bio-Pac system over from Warner Hall to Boebel Hall.

  • Setting up the Sign-up genius for the summer.

  • Creating and distributing a sign-up poster for my study.

  • Outlining and drafting the Intro and Methods section of my manuscript.

  • Organizing all my peer reviewed papers that I have read and need to read still.

  • Completing various Epigeum modules, Bio-Pac training and listening to a podcast about interoception.
